Do you chartreuse?

I must confess, I let out a little squeal of joy when I discovered that Etsy’s 2020 colour of the year is chartreuse. Char-what? Chartreuse darling!

I first came across this crazy puke yellow-green colour in the late 90s whilst watching a chick flick I can’t remember, but possibly starring Julia Roberts. My Best Friend’s Wedding? Runaway Bride? To be honest I have no idea, but I do remember the character gifted someone a chartreuse kettle because it was ‘in’. Quite frankly, I thought interior design could do one because that colour was ugly as f*ck.

I’m not sure what happened in the following years (maybe it was all that newborn baby poo I had to deal with) but chartreuse grew on me. It really is a pukey pooey yellowish green colour. I cannot think of a less garish description but I think I’ve hit the nail on the head and given you a delightful mental picture. And yet all of a sudden, I loved it. I teamed it with yellow and hot pink in a crochet project and purchased a beautiful, slinky tailored top from Next in this crazy shade. I fell hard for it’s lurid tone and elegant talent to simultaneously complement and clash.

Chartreuse teams beautifully with rich jewel tones, pale pastels and steely neutrals. As an accent colour it is striking, coming into it’s own in silks and velvets that stimulate the senses. As a wall colour it is flat and unconvincing but chartreuse accessories are striking, especially against bold patterns.

Check out the extent of my love affair here. I’ve pinned everything I love about chartreuse. Because apparently that’s what the cool kids are doing on Tuesday evenings nowadays.

Not convinced? Etsy describes chartreuse as, “a bold color known for increasing energy, encouraging unconventional thinking, and evoking feelings of growth and harmony…it’s daring, statement-making, and unexpected”. Clearly a more eloquent and persuasive description than mine, I admit!

So, do you do chartreuse? Are you team puke or team statement-making? Home accessories only or head to toe fashion? Drop me your thoughts in the comments below, I’d love to hear them.
