Five years ago today I became a mother. I became the centre of someone’s universe. I quickly learned how to take care of my helpless newborn. But raising a miniature human being? Now that is something that takes a little longer to figure out. Have I figured it out? No, not yet, but I’m working on it every day. Here’s what I have learned so far:
Be kind. Be compassionate. Be polite.
Respect other people’s feelings and opinions. It is ok to disagree and amicably debate but not to force your opinion on others.
Every one has bad days, it does not define them. You will have bad days, they will not define you.
Be the better person. Do as you would be done by and treat everyone how you would like to be treated.
Toys, colours and careers have no gender. If anyone tells you differently, politely re-educate them.
Defend the underdog. If you see something happening that is wrong, speak up. Be a part of the revolution.
Be proactive, not passive. Set goals and persevere. Don’t be disheartened when things go wrong. An equal amount of things will go right, you just need to look for them.
Not everyone will like you and that’s ok; you can’t be all things to all people.
You are a child of the universe. You are a miracle of evolution. Life is precious. Be mindful of your place in nature and impact on the environment, for you a part of a much bigger picture.
Seek happiness and strive to make others happy. Whatever the question, love is the answer. And above all, never stop being you.
